I was commissioned by the City of Auburn to create designs for two utility boxes in the city.
Home Is In A Bowl highlights four bowls of emblematic noodle soups from the Asian diaspora: Taiwanese beef noodle soup, udon and spicy ramen from Japan, and khao soi from Laos and Thailand. From one to another, a bowl of noodle soup marks a gesture of welcome and the beginning of breaking bread together.
Ice, Ice Baobing explores the cultural ubiquity and nuances of shaved ice desserts across the Asian diaspora: strawberry bingsoo from South Korea, chè from Vietnam, ais kacang from Singapore, Malaysia, and Brunei, mango baobing from Taiwan, halo-halo from the Philippines, and kakigori from Japan.
Food is how the Asian diaspora shows love, gives comfort, and heals. These two utility boxes will be installed in Auburn in Spring 2022.
