A watercolor series on Pittsburgh’s crown gem, Frick Park
Commissioned by the City of Pittsburgh’s Arts in Park Storyteller Program with Casey Droege Cultural Productions, What the Frick! is a series of watercolor and gouache paintings on one of Pittsburgh’s crown gems: Frick Park and the upcoming sculpture created by Matthew Geller. The series explores Frick Park as a magical, storied ground for shared community-building and gathering.
For this project, I surveyed Pittsburgh-based Reddit and Facebook groups asking community residents the following questions: What’s your favorite memory of a trip to Frick Park? How do you like to have fun in the park? Why is it important for Pittsburgh to have a public space like Frick Park?
Taking the dozens of community responses, I wove the stories that I received into the artwork, which focused on four main sites of play, movement, and gathering in Frick Park: the entrance gatehouse, the location of Matthew’s piece, the Frick Environmental Center, and the tunnels at Blue Slide Playground.
